Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) announced strict enforcement against horn use in and around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (Dhaka airport) area, warning violators of fines up to TK 10 thousand or three-months’ imprisonment.

Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Media and Public Relations Division, confirmed on Monday through a press release that DMP will take strict law enforcement measures against anyone violating silent zone regulations.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) declared a 1.5-kilometre silent zone covering the airport area from Scholastica School to Hotel La Meridien in September last year. Ban also applies to Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketan neighborhoods.

Horn use in these zones violates Section 45 of Road Transport Act 2018 and Rule 19(2) of Noise Pollution (Control) Regulations 2025. Newly issued 2025 regulations empower police to impose on-spot fines for honking or causing noise pollution in designated silent areas.

Violators face maximum penalty of TK 10 thousand fine or imprisonment up to three months under current legislation. Police can now impose fines immediately without requiring lengthy legal procedures.

Silent zone designation aims to reduce noise pollution in densely populated diplomatic and residential areas alongside airport operations zone. Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara host numerous embassies, high commissions and international organizations requiring quieter environment.

Airport area experiences heavy traffic throughout day and night due to passenger movements and cargo operations. Excessive horn use previously created significant noise disturbance for nearby residents and diplomatic missions.

DMP urged drivers to comply with silent zone regulations and avoid unnecessary horn use in designated areas to maintain peaceful environment.
