Bangladesh envoy to Libya meets expatriates, pledges support

Bangladesh’s ambassador to Libya met members of the Bangladeshi community in the western city of Misrata, assuring them of continued consular support and urging vigilance over security amid the country’s volatile situation.

The embassy said in a statement that Ambassador Major General Md Habib Ullah presided over the meeting, which around 200 expatriates from various professions attended.

Participants shared their experiences and raised concerns ranging from documentation hurdles to financial and personal security risks. The envoy said the embassy was working “tirelessly” to ensure consular and welfare services for Bangladeshis in Libya while maintaining close coordination with local authorities.

He urged expatriates to remain cautious given the prevailing conditions in the North African country, adding that the mission had held multiple meetings with relevant ministries and local officials to strengthen safety measures for foreign workers.

Visa and entry-related complications, including issues surrounding residence permits, were also discussed. The ambassador said the embassy was engaging with Libya’s labour authorities to help resolve such matters, including requests for easing procedures and waiving penalties where possible.

Responding to concerns over informal money transfers, he warned against using illegal channels and encouraged expatriates to send remittances through authorised exchange houses, describing formal transfers as both safer and more beneficial to Bangladesh’s economy.

He also cautioned against irregular migration, noting risks such as abduction and abuse faced by undocumented migrants. “Such practices endanger lives and harm the country’s image abroad,” he said, urging greater awareness among migrant communities and their families.

On repatriation, the envoy said the embassy was working with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to facilitate the voluntary return of Bangladeshis wishing to go home, with priority given to those held in detention centres.

He concluded by stressing the importance of maintaining good relations with local communities and abiding by the law, saying expatriates represent Bangladesh abroad.

Community members thanked the embassy for organising the meeting and called for similar engagements in the future.
