Bangladesh has temporarily suspended all visa and consular services at its High Commission in New Delhi and Deputy High Commission in Agartala due to an unexpected security situation, the foreign ministry said today.
Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the suspension will remain in force until further notice, citing security concerns following a recent incident in front of the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.
According to senior ministry officials, a group of around 20 to 25 members of an extremist organisation staged a protest outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Saturday night, chanting anti-Bangladesh slogans and issuing threats to Bangladeshâs High Commissioner to India.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain told journalists in Dhaka on Sunday that the diplomatic zone in New Delhi is usually a highly secured area, making the protestersâ access and demonstration there a matter of serious concern.
He said the incident has created a sense of insecurity for the High Commissioner and his family residing at the mission premises, prompting the authorities to take precautionary measures.
The government said it is closely monitoring the situation and will review the suspension once adequate security assurances are ensured by the host country authorities.
