Biman clarifies temporary suspension of Manchester flights

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has said the temporary suspension of its Dhaka/Sylhet–Manchester flights reflects operational and fleet realities, amid growing public discussion over the move.

In a statement, the national carrier said the Manchester route is not financially viable and that its limited number of wide-body aircraft (B787 and B777) are currently used across Europe, Hajj, and Middle East routes, creating pressure on fleet management.

It said a long-haul route such as Manchester ties up an aircraft for several days, making it difficult to meet the surge in demand during the Hajj season, when large numbers of additional flights are required.

At the same time, Middle East routes face heavy demand from migrant workers and Umrah pilgrims, making it necessary to deploy aircraft on higher-demand and more efficient sectors.

Biman also cited routine C-checks, engine overhauls, and structural inspections, which can keep aircraft out of service for weeks or months, as well as a global shortage of flight crew, adding further strain on long-haul operations.

Taking these factors into account, the airline said it had decided to suspend the Manchester route temporarily to maintain service continuity and operational stability while making the best use of its limited fleet.

To reduce passenger inconvenience, Biman has increased its London flights to five per week, including four via Sylhet and one direct from Dhaka. Biman has also shifted the effective date of the Manchester suspension from February 1 to March 1, 2026.

Passengers booked on the Manchester route will be able to change flights, travel via London, or receive ticket refunds without any additional charges, the airline said.

Biman added that aircraft procurement and crew recruitment are under way, and the resumption of Manchester flights will be considered once those processes are completed.
