Customs officials at Chattogram Shah Amanat International
Airport seized 120 grams of gold jewellery worth Tk 21 lakh 59 thousand 920 from
a passenger's baggage arriving from Dubai.
Md Abu Zahed landed in Chattogram on Bangladesh Biman flight
E148 from Dubai at 9:30am on Tuesday. His unaccompanied baggage
was scanned at the cargo terminal at 8:30pm, revealing gold-like items inside.
Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, Public Relations Officer
of Shah Amanat International Airport, confirmed the seizure on Wednesday
morning. He said a joint operation by the Customs Airfreight Branch and AVSEC
at the airport's cargo terminal led to the recovery.
Baggage was opened at 12:30 am in the presence of Nurul Alam,
representative of C&F agent Mountain Shipping Limited. After verification
by a jewellery expert, officials confiscated 120 grams of gold jewellery from
the bag.
"The seized gold was taken under a Departmental
Memorandum record. It is currently in the custody of Chattogram Customs House,
and further legal action is being taken," Ibrahim Khalil said.
Airport sources indicated the passenger attempted to smuggle
the gold through unaccompanied baggage, a common method used to evade customs
detection at international airports.
Customs officials have intensified vigilance at Chattogram
airport following increased attempts to smuggle gold and other contraband items
through various concealment methods.
