DU welcomes Bangali new year with gorgeous ‘Baishakhi Shovajatra’

Dhaka University (DU) has welcomed the Banglai New year, 1433, as its pervading tradition, with a colorful ‘Baishakhi Shovajatra’(procession) today featuring diverse cultural activities.
The procession started from the Faculty of Fine Arts, proceed toward Shahbagh, took U-turn, passed the Raju Sculpture and TSC, headed toward Doel Chattar, passed the Bangla Academy, and finally conclude at the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Preparations for the procession started at 8am and started at 9am following singing the national anthem, with the leadership of DU Vice Chancellor (VC) professor dr. A B M Obaidul Islam, including people from all walks of life, foreign diplomats, guests, social and cultural activists, also tribesmen.
In the procession, a horse riding police fleet was in first position, then a group of DU students carrying the national flag followed by distinguished guests including cultural minister Nitai Roy Choudhury, DU teachers. Following them, the main motifs, including a rooster, violin, pigeon, horse, and elephant, displayed one after another. Following the tradition of folk symbols, these represent the multi-dimensional significance of strength, creation, peace, glory, and dynamism.
Tribesmen are seen showing their cultural activities and the procession filled with the sound of musicians. The motifs were designed to highlight folk traditions and cultural uniqueness.
Since wearing masks is prohibited in the university area on Pahela Baishakh, participants in the procession were seen carrying masks prepared by the Faculty of Fine Arts.
With the theme "Harmony of the New Year, Resurrection of Democracy," people participated enthusiastically in this year's Baisakhi Shovajatra. People from all ages are seen coming here in the fine arts faculty of DU with their family, friends, and taking selfies. Various student organiszations are holding programs marking this day. A festive atmosphere is prevailing.
DU VC said that the Bangali New year is another significant chapter in Banglai’s culture and tradition, which is observed in a joyful atmosphere. This is not only Bangali’s but also a collective festival of people of all languages and cultures in Bangladesh.
"In many cases, we are deviating from our own culture and traditions and becoming accustomed to following other cultures. But our own culture is very rich and strong. By preserving, nurturing and practicing this culture, we can present our identity to the world," VC added.
