Returning expatriate
workers have accused airport staff of systematic baggage theft at Hazrat
Shahjalal International Airport, claiming valuable items vanished from their
checked luggage.
YouTube video uploaded
on Friday shows distressed passengers at the baggage claim area discovering
their suitcases had been forcibly opened. Multiple workers alleged their bags
were emptied and then re-wrapped in plastic to hide the tampering.
"My mobile is gone,
the lock has been broken," one passenger said, holding up damaged luggage.
Another victim claimed seven mobile phones were stolen from his bag.
Passengers reported
losing cash, including Saudi Riyals, along with other valuables. "Our
money, mobile phones, belongings, everything is gone. There is nothing,"
one worker said.
Workers gathered in the
baggage claim area, demanding answers from airport authorities who were not
immediately present. "Who did this? Where are the authorities?" they
questioned.
One witness pointed to
re-wrapped luggage, saying, "They just put it in plastic," suggesting
thieves attempted to conceal evidence after emptying bags.
Security vulnerabilities
at Bangladesh's main international airport have come under scrutiny following
the allegations. Affected passengers, primarily expatriate workers returning
home, expressed shock and anger over the apparent breach of trust.
Airport authorities have
not issued an official statement regarding the allegations. Matter requires
formal investigation to establish facts and address security concerns raised by
the incident.
