Airbus announced on Tuesday that its H160 helicopter has commenced its first offshore energy missions in Europe, marking the aircraft's entry into the region's oil, gas, and offshore wind transportation market through operations by Belgian helicopter operator NHV Group.
According to Airbus, NHV has begun operating two H160 helicopters leased from GD Helicopter Finance (GDHF) to support crew transportation services for offshore energy installations in Northern Europe. The aircraft are based primarily in Den Helder, a key logistics hub for North Sea energy operations in the Netherlands, but may also be deployed to other locations across Europe.
The launch marks a significant milestone in the commercial rollout of the H160, Airbus Helicopters said, as the company aims to expand the use of its latest-generation rotorcraft in the offshore energy sector.
"The addition of the H160 represents another important step in NHV's growth journey," NHV Group Chief Executive Lars-Henrik Thorngreen said in a statement. He said the aircraft would strengthen the company's operational capabilities, increase flexibility for customers, and support future business opportunities in established and emerging markets.
GD Helicopter Finance Chief Executive Michael York described the deployment as a significant advancement for offshore aviation operations, saying the H160 sets a new benchmark for the sector while supporting the industry's transition to more efficient aircraft.
Airbus officials highlighted the helicopter's advanced technology, fuel efficiency, and safety features as key factors behind its adoption by offshore operators.
"Witnessing the H160 taking to the skies for its first European offshore energy missions is a proud moment for Airbus," said Regis Magnac, Head of Energy, Leasing and Global Accounts at Airbus Helicopters. He described the aircraft as a significant advancement in performance, operational efficiency and passenger comfort for energy-sector transport missions.
The offshore energy market is an important segment for helicopter manufacturers and operators, particularly in regions such as the North Sea, where aircraft play a critical role in transporting personnel to and from offshore oil, gas, and wind installations. Operators are increasingly seeking newer aircraft that offer lower operating expenses, improved environmental performance, and enhanced safety standards.
The H160 is designed to perform a wide range of missions, including offshore transport, search and rescue, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and business aviation. Airbus said the helicopter has already entered service in several countries, including Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Airbus said it would continue supporting NHV as the operator integrates the aircraft into its offshore energy operations across Europe, while the deployment could serve as a reference point for future customers considering fleet modernisation in the sector.
