Paltan diagnostic centre sealed for unapproved worker medicals
A mobile court has sealed a diagnostic centre in Dhaka's Paltan area for allegedly conducting health tests and issuing medical reports for Malaysia-bound workers without any government approval, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment said Friday.
The drive was carried out on Thursday (October 1) at "Human Diagnostic and Medical Centre" on Box Culvert Road in Paltan, according to a press release from the ministry. It said that the facility had several serious irregularities.
The ministry said a review of the centre's own database showed that medical tests were completed and reports issued for 14 people intending to go to Malaysia between September 20 and 30. The centre had no government permission to carry out such tests, it said.
The ministry also said there was evidence of fraudulent activity in the same building, where the centre displayed a signboard of another establishment, "Samiha Diagnostic Centre", alongside its own.
In the interest of the public and to maintain discipline in the overseas employment sector, the mobile court ordered all activities of the centre closed and sealed it immediately, the ministry said.
Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said the government has a "zero tolerance" policy against any irregularity, fraud, or unauthorised activity in the overseas employment sector. He said no institution would be allowed to cheat workers bound for Malaysia.
The minister said strict legal action would be taken against institutions issuing fake or fraudulent medical reports to people going abroad. He added that such surprise drives and mobile court operations would continue across the country to protect workers' interests and ensure transparency.
