Malaysia Airlines is expanding its network and digital footprint in China, citing strong passenger growth and reinforcing Kuala Lumpur's position as a gateway to Malaysia and the wider region, the carrier said in a statement.
The airline hosted its China Trade Gala in Shanghai on 22 September 2026, bringing together travel trade leaders and corporate partners. According to Malaysia Airlines, the event was intended to recognise stakeholders who have supported the airline's growth in China and to share its future priorities in the market.
In the first half of 2026, Malaysia Airlines carried more than 600,000 passengers on its China services, a 27 percent increase from the same period last year, with an average load factor of 84 percent, the airline said. It expects to carry more than 52,000 passengers to and from China during the upcoming Golden Week holiday period, running from 26 September to 11 October, a 21 percent rise year-on-year.
Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), said China was "a priority growth market for Malaysia Airlines," and that the expansion of the network to nine gateways reflected the airline's "confidence in its long-term potential." He said the progress had been made possible by "the trust of our customers and the close collaboration of our government, travel trade, corporate and industry partners," and that under the group's Long-Term Business Plan 3.0, the airline would continue investing in its network, fleet and operating capabilities to serve Chinese travellers "at scale."
Malaysia Airlines restored daily services to Chengdu this year and introduced new daily flights to Shenzhen and Changsha, extending its reach into Western China, the Greater Bay Area and Central China. The airline now serves nine gateways in China, in addition to existing services to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong and Taipei.
The network is set to expand further through sister carrier Firefly, which plans to launch daily Boeing 737-800 services between Kuala Lumpur and Kunming, subject to regulatory approval. The route would establish a new direct link between Yunnan province and Malaysia.
Alongside its network growth, Malaysia Airlines signed three Memoranda of Understanding with Huawei, Weixin Pay and TravelSky Technology Limited at the Shanghai gala. The airline said the agreements cover digital platforms, customer engagement and distribution, aimed at integrating its services more closely with platforms widely used by Chinese consumers and making it easier for travellers to discover, book and manage their journeys.
Malaysia Airlines said the initiatives form part of its broader strategy to support Malaysia's Visit Malaysia 2026 tourism campaign and welcome more Chinese travellers to the country.
